Алексей Тулупов стал одним из первых, кто купил активы уходящей из России иностранной компании: в апреле его холдинг «Коломенский» стал владельцем российского бизнеса финской компании Fazer.
Тулупов начал бизнес в 1990-х — вместе с Сергеем Гордеевым (сейчас — основной акционер группы ПИК) они создали компанию «Росбилдинг», которая специализировалась на слияниях и поглощениях. Фактически она скупала предприятия и перепродавала их. В 2007 году партнеры закрыли компанию и стали строить бизнес по отдельности. В конце того же года Тулупов основал компанию Sminex. В начале у нее была широкая специализация — она интересовалась инвестициями в девелопмент, ретейл, пищевую промышленность, нефть. В рознице, например, запустил и через несколько лет продал сеть «хобби-гипермаркетов» «Леонардо». Выкупил Тулупов и булочно-кондитерский комбинат «Коломенский»: предполагалось, что площадка будет разделена на производственный и девелоперский проекты, первый из которых компания продаст профильному инвестору. Но в итоге бизнесмен решил оставить весь бизнес и сделал «Коломенский» крупнейшим игроком хлебного рынка, а Sminex сосредоточилась на строительстве жилья высокого ценового сегмента в Москве.
